SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team saw its six-match winning streak halted Saturday at Campus Pool with a 6-3 loss to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival San Diego State.
The Gauchos now stand at 13-9 on the season, 1-4 in MPSF play, while sixth-ranked SDSU improved to 14-8 overall 4-5 MPSF.
After the two teams traded scores in the first period, UCSB drew first blood in the second as senior Teresa Gorbett found the back of the net at the 4:54 mark. It marked the ninth straight game in which Gorbett has tallied at least one goal.
However the Aztecs stormed back with three unanswered goals in a two-minute span from Heidi Matsumoto, Amber Prestegard and Holly Hartzell. Meanwhile on the other end of the pool junior goalkeeper Ashley Zabel stymied the UCSB attack, even blocking a two-meter penalty shot by Gorbett. The visitors took a 4-2 advantage into the intermission.
After halftime Hartzell scored two more of her game-high four goals, one in the third period and the other in the fourth. Trailing 6-2, all Santa Barbara could muster was a goal just one second before the final buzzer by sophomore Nicola Bishop, her second on the season.
The Gauchos conclude their busy stretch of six games in seven days on Sunday, March 30 by hosting 15th-ranked UC Irvine. The MPSF showdown in Campus Pool is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
