REDLANDS, Calif. & CLAREMONT, Calif. -
It was the best of times and it was the best of times. For the 11th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team, Tuesday was a tale of two cities. And two wins.
In an afternoon match at the University of Redlands, the Gauchos used a three-goal effort by Erin Lezak to post a 9-6 win over the Bulldogs. A couple hours later and about thirty miles up I-10, they used a balanced attack to defeat Claremont McKenna Scripps, 11-3.
In the afternoon match at Redlands, UCSB leading-scorer Teresa Gorbett scored a pair of goals to go with Lezak's three. Four other Gauchos, Erika Campagne, Alaina Whitaker, Katy Kunkel and Erika Clark, notched one goal apiece.
In the evening match at Claremont, the Gauchos jumped out of the gate quickly, scoring five first period goals and leading 7-1 at half. Lezak and Gorbett each scored a pair of goal to lead the way over the Stags. Campagne, Kunkel, Clark, Jen D'Anna, Megan Ricks, Lindsey Borden and Irene Whitney each tallied one goal in the victory.
Junior Kristen McGlennon started both matches in goal for the Gauchos, collecting a total of 11 saves.
The pair of wins extends UCSB's winning streak to five matches in a row. Overall the Gauchos improve to 12-8 on the season.
Santa Barbara travels to Arizona State on Thursday, March 27 for a match against the Sun Devils. They return home for a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contests this weekend, hosting San Diego State at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday and UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
