Santa Barbara, Calif. - Katy Kunkel scored three goals to lead the 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team to a 7-5 win over the eighth-ranked University of Hawaii on Friday in Santa Barbara.
Hawaii led the Gauchos 3-2 at the end of the first half of play with goals from Beth Novick, Tracy Andersen, and Kristy Barnall. Santa Barbara went on a 4-0 run to close the third quarter with goals being scored by Kunkel, Erin Lezak, and Jennifer D'Anna. Lezak would go on to score her second goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter to hold off the Wahine Warriors despite goals by Bagnall and Karin van Hoff late in the quarter.
The victory improves UCSB's record to 7-6 and 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hawaii drops to 2-5 and 1-2 in the MPSF.
Both teams return to action Saturday and Sunday in the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Invitational held all day at the Rec Center pool and Campus.
