The UCSB women's track & field team finished fourth at the 11th annual Big West Challenge Cup held Saturday at UC Irvine. Despite wins in all three distance events and a new meet record by Amy Haapanen the Gauchos came up short as a team, finishing fourth with 145.5 points. CS Long Beach won with 165 points, followed by CS Fullerton (161.5), and UC Irvine (160).
Senior team captain Katie Appenrodt kicked past Wendy Chan of UC Irvine to win the 1500m in 4:35.88, and came back to claim victory in the 3000m, recording a personal best 9:51.12. Desiree DeJesus also set a PR for 3,000m, finishing second in 9:58.89, and Cosette Smith took third in 10:00.79.
Freshman Lauren Christman was a surprise winner at 800m, knocking over 3 seconds off her previous best to win the event in 2:14.06.
Amy Haapanen established a new meet record in the shot put, winning the event with a best mark of 46' 0.5". Heather Quinn finished second in the discus (131' 11") and third in the shot (40'10").
Elise Geiger led the way for the sprinters posting season bests at 100m (12.39w) and 200m (25.06w). Kylie McCuen also recorded a season best in the 100m
(12.44) and Danielle Debeaubien finished third in the javelin (118' 7).
