FULLERTON, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara athletes posted several marks that either qualified or improved a previous qualifier for the Big West Conference meet at a non-scoring invitational Friday and Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.
Distance runners led the assault at 1500 meters and 5000 meters. Sophomore Desiree Leek finished second in the 1500 meter with a lifetime best of 4:36.43, well under the women's conference standard of 4:45.00. Cosette Smith, a redshirt sophomore, ran 17:32.88 for the 5000 meters, 18 seconds under her previous personal best, while senior Liz Mallon also dropped a huge PR with a time of 17:49.05. Both times were comfortably under the Big West mark of 18:21.00. Freshman Stephanie Rothstein made a nice debut for the Gauchos in the 3000 meters, finishing eighth in 10:37.30.
