RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's track and field squad finished second at the All-Cal Challenge Cup with 159.50 points. UC Irvine won the meet with 199 points. The Gauchos were followed by UC Riverside with 155 points and UC San Diego with 142.50.
For the second time in as many meets, freshman Amy Haapanen raised the school record in the shot put. Her mark of 46-6.75 also makes her the first Gaucho woman to make an NCAA Regional qualifier this season.
Several other Gaucho women made Big West standards. Senior team captain Katie Appenrodt won the 5000 meter in a time of 17:19.33 while teammate Liz Mallon finished second with a personal best time of 11:21.77 in the steeplechase. Desiree DeJesus clocked in at 11:29.46 in the steeple and 18:03.66 in the 5000 meter.
In the field events Danielle DeBeaubien won the javelin in 125-10 while Rachael Elbinger recorded a mark of 5-3 in the high jump. Deborah Samson took third in the pole vault with a 11-0.25 while Becky Freeman had a breakthrough performance in the pole vault, raising her lifetime best by a foot to 10-6.25.
The Gauchos travel to Fullerton Saturday, March 8 for the Ben Brown Invitational.
