FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's track and field team opened the 2003 season with a convincing victory in a five-way meet Saturday. The women's squad totaled 190.5 points for the win over second place CS Fullerton (143.5). UC Riverside finished third with 142 points, followed by CS Los Angeles with 40 and CS Bakersfield with 36.
Amy Haapanen, a freshman from Manteca, Calif., finished second in the shot put with a best of 44-11.75, eclipsing the UCSB school record by over a foot. The previous record of 43-10.5 was set by Beth Foster in 1999. Haapanen also won the discus in 154-9, the fourth best mark in Gaucho history. She also finished fifth in the hammer for a total of 20 points on the day. Freshman Heather Quinn also made an impact in the throws in her Gaucho debut, finishing fourth in the shot (42-2.25, fifth all time at UCSB) and fifth in the discus.
Gaucho distance runners dominated, going 1-2 in the 800 meter, 1-2-3 in the mile, and taking the top five spots in the two-mile. Sophomore, Desiree Leek won the mile in 5:00.77, followed by Katie Appenrodt with a time of 5:01.28 and Cosette Smith with a 5:05.98. Desiree DeJesus won the two-mile in 10:57.11, followed by Leek, Appenrodt, Smith and Liz Mallon. Lindsay Christman ran a 2:20.93 to win the 800 meter.
Three more freshmen women made solid contributions. Kylie McCuen finished second in the 200 meter with a time of 25.44, the 10th best time in UCSB history, and third in the 100 meter with a 12.47. Elise Geiger was second in the 100 (12.46) and fourth in the 200 (25.75). Danielle DeBeaubien threw the javelin 119-9, good enough for second place. She also finished third in the 400 hurdles and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.85).

Senior Deborah Samson cleared 12-0 to win the pole vault. Senior heptathlete Annita Reuben competed in six events, finished third in both the long jump and shot put.
The Gauchos travel to UC Riverside for the All-Cal Challenge Cup March 1.
