Santa Barbara, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team opened the 2003 season with a 7-0 sweep of Gonzaga. The Gauchos took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 spots. UCSB went on to sweep the singles matches for the win.
Senior Uzma Khan defeated Jamie Buterbaugh at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 for her first win of 2003. Khan began the season with a national ranking of #78 in the latest Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Khan and Marielle Gruenig combined at No. 1 doubles, defeating Bates and Buterbauch 8-3.
The Gauchos move to 1-0 while Gonzaga drops to 1-2 on the season. UC Santa Barbara is in action again Jan. 22 when they travel to Malibu to meet Pepperdine.
