Campbell/Cartier Tournament Highlights
UC Santa Barbara finished in the middle of the pack with a 2-2 tournament record. The Gauchos opened their weekend with a shutout victory over Oregon who was coming off of wins over No. 9 Florida State and No. 17 Georgia. UCSB closed out their weekend with win over UCF.
In Santa Barbara's two losses, New Mexico and Sacramento State, they were plagued by their inability to advance runners around the base-paths. The Gauchos left 13 runners on base in the loss to UNM, and 12 in the loss to Sac State.
Senior catcher/infielder Jami Trinidad, with one RBI against UCF, tied for second all-time on UCSB's career runs batted in list.
Trinidad led the Gauchos on the weekend, hitting .500 with six hits in 12 at-bats, including two doubles and UCSB's first triple of the season. Ended the tournament with a .600 on-base percentage thanks to a team-high three walks.
Senior outfielder Ashley Groefsema had another solid week at the plate for the Gauchos, ending with a .455 batting average, one run scored, one RBI, and one stolen base. Groefsema leads the team with a .400 average for the season.
UCSB's dynamic pitching duo of senior Loren Thornburg and freshman Carly Harmon were outstanding once again, combining for a 0.49 weekend ERA. Both pitchers picked up their fifth wins of the season after identical 1-1 records at the Campbell/Cartier Classic. Harmon's 0.49 tournament ERA (1 ER in 14.1 innings) just edged Thornburg's 0.50 ERA (1 ER in 14.0 innings). Harmon earned the win over UCF and Thornburg threw her fifth shutout of the season in the win against Oregon.
UC Santa Barbara, still off to it's best start in school history, is now 11-3 on the season heading into next weekend's UCSB Softball By The Beach Invitational. Prior their upcoming tournament, the Gauchos host BYU on Thursday, February 20th at 2:00 p.m. at Campus Diamond.
