SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Junior forward Randi Johns scored her fourth goal of the season and assisted on another as the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team opened Big West play with a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.
Johns' goal came at the 7:35 mark when she took the ball just over the midfield stripe, drove the right sideline, cut towards the center of the field near the top of the penalty box and struck hard shot from about 20 yards out. The ball just eluded a leaping Laura Janke, the Titan goalkeeper, and snuck its way under the crossbar, giving UCSB a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 55th-minute. Junior midfielder Krystal Sandza collected the ball at the top of the penalty box and found senior Emilee Schwimmer on the left hand side above the box. After dribbing past a defender, Schwimmer drilled a long shot from about 35 yards out, past a leaping Janke, making it 2-0 Gauchos.
Santa Barbara scored its final goal in the closing minute at the 89:33 mark. Johns struck a corner kick to the far post and junior forward Jennifer Borcich was there to head it home, giving UCSB its final 3-0 margin.
The Gauchos outshot the Titans on the evening by a 26-7 margin and came close on several chances. Borcich hit the goalpost on one shot and Janke made six saves, two of which stopped UCSB shots from point-blank range. Gaucho goalkeeper Jamie Considine, a sophomore, had four saves. Cal State Fullerton sophomore forward Kandace Wilson, who entered the match second in the Big West with five goals, was limited to just a pair of shots.
The victory by UCSB snapped the Titans' two-match winning streak in the series. Cal State Fullerton defeated the Gauchos in key late-season matches each of the last two years.
