Gauchos Edge Eastern Washington 2-1 to Win 49er Classic

Sept. 14, 2003

Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team outshot Eastern Washington on Sunday by a margin of 31-4, but the Gauchos needed a break to record a narrow 2-1 win over the Eagles.

With the score tied at 1-1, UCSB freshman Allie Keuny hit an intended cross from the top left corner of the box, but the ball went past the outstretched arms of Eastern Washington goalkeeper Tiera Como in into the net for the winning goal at the 63:48 mark. Como recorded an amasing 14 saves in the match against the Gauchos. For Keuny, it was her first goal of the season.

Santa Barbara got on the board first. At the 26:46 mark, junior forward Jennifer Borcich drilled a shot that was blocked by Como, but junior midfielder Krystal Sandza was there to put the rebound home for her third goal of the season. Borcich was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after scoring two goals and assisting on two others in a pair of Gaucho wins. Sandza and senior forward Alma Martinez joined Borcich as UCSB put three players on the All-Tournament Team.

The Eagles tied the score at 1-1 at 56:43 when Beth Russell scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out. The tie, however, only lasted for seven minutes until Keuny's goal.

UCSB outshot Eastern Washington 31-4. In Friday's 6-0 win over Southern Utah, the Gauchos recorded 33 shots, so their tournament total was an astounding 64.

The Gauchos are now 3-2-1 on the year and they have put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season. UCSB will play its first home match of the 2003 campain on Friday, September 19, when it hosts Oregon State in a 7:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. The match against the Beavers will open the War by the Shore. On Sunday, September 21, the Gauchos will play host to Xavier University in a 1:00 p.m. match.
