LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The Saint Mary's women's soccer team defeated UC Santa Barbara 3-2 Sunday during their second game of the UCLA Tournament in Los Angeles. The Gauchos finished 0-1-1 in the tourney, after tying to No. 2-ranked UCLA 0-0 in overtime on Wednesday. The loss drops UCSB's record to 1-2-1 on the season.
Saint Mary's got on the board early when Jenny Barbera scored off an assist by Crenshaw in the 19th minute. The Gauchos tied the score just before halftime on an unassisted goal by junior forward Randi Johns. Johns dribbled up the right side and put home her second goal of the campaign.
After St. Mary's scored the first two goals of the second half to build a 3-1 edge, UCSB pulled to within one on another unassisted goal. Krystal Sandza drove up the middle and scored at the 65:54 mark of the match to narrow the lead to 3-2, but that was the last of the scoring.
The Gaels were led by McKenna Belzer, a freshman from Boise, ID, who scored her first two goals in a Saint Mary's uniform against the Gauchos. Belzer's first goal came off an assist by Chelsea Montero, and her second goal, coming 41 second later was assisted by Lucianne Crenshaw.
UCSB outshot the Gaels by a 12-10 count and sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Considine had three saves in defeat. St. Mary's was the first non-ranked opponent that the Gauchos have faced this season.
Santa Barbara returns to the pitch on Friday, September 12 when they play Southern Utah in a neutral site match at Long Beach State.
