UCSB Edged by 12th-Ranked Tennessee in Season Opener, 1-0

Aug. 29, 2003

Final Stats

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The biggest question mark for the UC Santa Barbara women's soccer team entering the 2003 season was defense. Would the Gauchos be able to stop opponents from scoring?

In Friday's season-opener at 12th-ranked Tennessee, UCSB nearly pitched a shutout, but in the end it was the Lady Vols' stingy defense, led by Preseason First Team All-American Keeley Dowling, was too much for the Gauchos to overcome. But just barely.

Tennessee forward Lyndsey Patterson scored on an assist from Kayla Lockaby at the 81:31 mark for the only goal of the match, giving UT the win. Patterson streaked down the right wing and took a perfect feed from Lockaby, scoring from eight yards out.

Overall, UCSB was limited to four shots, only one of which was recorded as a shot-on-goal. Junior forward Randi Johns, a transfer from Cypress Community College, collected two of the shots, including the only shot-on-goal. Junior midfielder Krystal Sandza, who paced UCSB in scoring last year with 25 goals, was held to one shot. Junior forward Jennifer Borcich, who was marked by the All-American Dowling, was shutout both in terms of goals and shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Considine played a solid match for Santa Barbara as she recorded three saves. Tennessee's goalkeeper, Vanessa Phillips-Bossh needed just one save to post the shutout. Overall the Lady Vols had eight shots, four of which were shots-on-goal.

The Gauchos drop to 0-1 on the season. Tennessee, which advanced to the third round of the 2002 NCAA Championship Tournament, is 1-0. UCSB remains back east for its second match of the year when it travels to Charlotte on Sunday for a match against UNC Charlotte.
