Road Warrior
UCSB's back-up to former point guard LaShay Fears last season, Sha'Rae Gibbons saw most of her action on the road in 2006-07. While Gibbons played in just 10 games for a total of 41 minutes as a sophomore, she definitely saw action in some hostile enviroments as eight of her 10 appearances came outside the friendly confines of the Thunderdome. In fact, Gibbons first appearance of the season came at defending national champion Maryland December 2. She also came off the bench against non-conference foes Pepperdine December 18 and Oregon in the Gauchos' loss in the second round of WNIT March 17. In all, 31 of her 41 minutes played on the season came on the road.
Gibbons Retains Backup Role
With the addition of Lauren Pedersen to this year's roster as well as the departure of the starter the past two seasons in LaShay Fears, Sha'Rae Gibbons will maintain her position as a backup point guard in 2007-08. With Pedersen, who is slated to become the Gauchos' new starting point guard, and Fears playing ahead of her, Gibbons was unlikely to see much playing time this season. But now that Fears has decided to transfer and take her services elsewhere, the Sacramento, Calif. native will no longer be buried as deep on the UCSB depth chart and should have a better opportunity to earn some playing time. A good ball handler and decent shooter, Gibbons will also have to compete with Jessica Wilson, who is excellent running the point, for time at the one.
2006-07
The Gauchos' only true point guard to back up LaShay Fears, Gibbons appeared in just 10 games as a sophomore last season...Missed the first five games of the year recovering from offseason foot surgery and then missed nine games from January 4 through February 3 with a right knee injury...Scored her only basket of 2006-07 in a season-high seven minutes against Loyola Marymount December 9.
2005-06
Took a personal leave of absence from UCSB and missed the 2005-06 campaign...Re-enrolled in school during the Spring 2006 academic quarter and resumed workouts with the Gauchos.
2004-05
Provided depth at the point guard spot, appearing in 27 games, the highest total among UCSB's five freshmen...Earned lone start in the January 6 win over Utah State, when eight Gauchos were sidelined for various reasons...Played 36 minutes against Idaho January 8, the most by a Gaucho rookie in a single game that season...All of her career-high eight points at UC Irvine on December 30 were scored in the second period to help break open a tight 42-39 game at halftime...21 of her 26 rebounds on the season came during Big West play...Three more were grabbed during the league tourney...Dished off an assist in her lone minute of NCAA Tournament action vs. Notre Dame March 19...Buried her first three attempts from beyond the three-point arc as a collegian.
