STANFORD, Calif. -
All-American Tony Azevedo scored six goals and sophomore Thomas Hopkins added two to lead fourth-ranked Stanford past ninth-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 10-7 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match on Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
The Cardinal took a 10-3 lead into the fourth quarter, but led by junior Brian Alexander and senior Doug Arthur, the Gauchos mounted a comeback. UCSB outscored Stanford 4-0 in the final frame to close the gap to 10-7. Alexander and Arthur each finished with three goals for the Gauchos and Andrew Schoneberger added one. Alexander has now scored 44 goals on the season, including 16 in the last three matches.
Stanford is now 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. UCSB drops to 11-8 overall and 0-1 in league. The Gauchos return to action on Saturday, October 25 when they travel to UCLA for a noon match.
