SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
Junior Brian Alexander scored seven goals, including the final three in regulation and the game-winner in overtime, to lead tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara to an 8-6 victory over ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday at UCSB's Recreation Center Pool.
Loyola Marymount's Ryan Chapatte scored his third and final goal of the match with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Lions their largest lead at 5-2. Alexander scored with 58-seconds remaining in the third quarter to pull the Gauchos to within 5-3.
Santa Barbara scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter and Alexander had both. He tallied with 5:42 remaining to make the score 5-4 Loyola Marymount and then he tied the score with 3:27 to go. The teams did not score again over the final 3:27 of regulation.
Alexander gave UCSB its first lead of the match, 6-5, with 20-seconds to go in the first three-minute overtime. Junior Andrew Schoneberger became the first Gaucho player other than Alexander to score when he gave his team a two-goal cushion with 1:15 remaining in the second overtime period. Loyola Marymount's Scott Smith scored with just 31-seconds to cut the gap to 7-5, but Alexander finished-off his career-best day, scoring on a penalty shot with just 0:11 remaining.
The non-conference win improves UCSB's record to 10-7. Loyola Marymount drops to 9-8 on the year. The Gauchos return to action on Friday, October 17, when they travel to UC Santa Cruz for a 3:00 p.m. match. UCSB opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday, October 18 when they travel to Stanford.
