The tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara water polo team split a pair of matches on the final day of the NorCal Tournament at Stanford. The Gauchos defeated UC Davis 8-4 in their first match of the day and then in the ninth-place match, lost an overtime heartbreaker to Loyola Marymount, 7-6.
In the match against UC Davis, UCSB broke a 1-1 first quarter tie with three consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead entering the second quarter. After the Aggies cut the lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter, the Gauchos scored three more goals to extend the lead to 7-2 and coasted to the 8-4 win.
In the tournament's ninth-place match, Santa Barbara overcame a 4-1 halftime deficit, outscoring the Lions 5-2 in the final two periods of regulation, before losing in overtime 7-6. Andrew Schoneberger, scored his second goal of the match with 23 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. The teams were scoreless through the first OT period, but LMU's Kris Barr tallied his third goal of the match at 1:27 of the second OT, giving his team the one-goal victory.
UCSB won't have to wait long for a rematch with Loyola Marymount. The Gauchos and Lions will play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11 at UCSB's Recreation Center Pool. The match will be Santa Barbara's home opener.
