PALO ALTO, Calif. -
Tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara split its two matches on Saturday, the first day of the NorCal Water Polo Tournament at Stanford.
The Gauchos dropped their opening match, a 9-7 decision to seventh-ranked UCLA. UCSB thought it had tied the score at 8-8 in the closing minutes, but a match-tying goal was disallowed after problems with the game clock.
Ian Christensen, Brian Alexander and Doug Arthur led the way for the Gauchos in the match against the Bruins, scoring two goals apiece. Freshman goalkeeper Rick Wright kept UCSB in the match coming up with ten saves.
In their second contest of the day, Andrew Schoneberger scored a goal with 1:49 remaining to snap a tie and give the Gauchos an 8-7 win over Santa Clara. Christensen led UCSB offensively with four goals against the Broncos. Steve Traverso had two goals and Wright contributed seven saves.
The split of two matches gives the Gauchos an overall record of 8-6 on the season. They continue play at the NorCal Tournament on Sunday when they take on UC Davis in a match scheduled to start at 8:40 a.m. The winner of that match will play for ninth-place in the tourney.
