Junior Brian Alexander netted seven goals as the UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team went a perfect 2-0 in first-day action at the Inland Empire Tournament in Redlands, Calif.
Alexander scored three goals in the Gauchos' first match of the day, an 11-6 win over UC Davis, and he followed-up that performance by scoring four goals in UCSB's 9-4 victory over the University of Redlands.
In the win over UC Davis, UCSB used a five-goal outburst in the second period to break open a game that was tied 2-2 at the end of the first period. The teams played even in the second half, and the Gauchos coasted to the 11-6 win. In addition to the trio of scores by Alexander, sophomore Ian Christensen and senior Doug Arthur each scored a pair of goals against the Aggies. Freshman Rick Wright and junior Mike Hoy split time in goal and Wright collected five saves.
Alexander scored four goals in UCSB's second win of the day, a 9-4 decision over Redlands. He was aided by freshman Matt Tilburg who scored two goals. Tilburg also had one goal in the win over UC Davis. Wright was again in goal for the Gauchos and he collected three saves.
The pair of wins improves Santa Barbara's record to 4-2 on the year. The Gauchos will continue action at the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday when they take on the University of La Verne and Whittier. Both matches will be played at La Verne.
