SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team dropped two matches on the final day of competition at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational. The Gauchos were edged by UC Irvine, 7-5, and by the host Tritons, 10-8.
In the match against UC Irvine, UCSB entered the fourth period with a 5-3 lead, but were outscored by the Anteaters 4-1 in the final frame. Andrew Schoneberger scored three of UCSB's five goals in the match, with Steve Traverso and Doug Arthur each scoring one.
The Gauchos also struggled in the fourth quarter of their 10-8 loss to UC San Diego. The match was tied at 6-6 entering the final period, but the Tritons outscored UCSB 4-2 to post the win. Traverso and freshman Matt Dale each had a pair of goals in the defeat, while Matt Tilborg, Ian Christensen, Doug Arthur and Joe Ferguson scored one apiece.
UCSB, which is now 2-2 on the season, returns to the pool this weekend when it plays at the Inland Empire Tournament in both Redlands and Claremont.
