SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
UC Santa Barbara opened the 2003 men's water polo season on Saturday and they did so successfully, posting wins over Whittier College and Loyola Marymount at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
In their first match of the tournament, the Gauchos had ten different players score, including six with two or more, to blast Whittier, 21-4. Freshman Joe Ferguson scored four goals, while freshman Brian Alexander, Andrew Schoneberger and Matt Tilborg each added three. In addition, Doug Arthur and Ramiro Saldain each added a pair.
Alexander led the way in the Gauchos' second match of the day scoring three goals as UCSB defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-7. Tilborg and Steve Traverso each tallied a pair of scores in the narrow win. Schoneberger also scored for the Gauchos.
UCSB is 2-0 on the season. On Sunday, they will take on UC Irvine and UC San Diego in the final day of the tournament.
