Brigham Young University defeated UC Santa Barbara in a three game match, 30-26, 30-24, 30-24. The loss leaves the Gauchos 4-10 overall, 1-7 in MPSF play. BYU improves to 8-1 overall and in conference.
Rafael Paal led the Cougars in kills with 13 total, and a .600 average. Jaime Mayol and Jonathan Alleman both registered 12 kills for the night. Michael Burke led the defense for BYU, totalling 5 block assists, and Carlos Moreno brought 4 block assists. The Cougars outblocked UCSB 10-5, and averaged better for hitting, .466-.308.
The top three hitters for the Gauchos, each with 9 kills were Matt Boelk, Keith Busam, and Michael Kennedy. Kennedy also led UCSB in blocks with 1 solo block and 2 block assists. Busam helped out on defense as well, leading the Gauchos with 5 digs.
The Gauchos will have their chance at redemption Saturday night, with a rematch against BYU at 7pm.
