Santa Barbara, Calif.- Mike Nelson had 17 kills and seven digs, hitting an average of .615 to lead the men's volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-21, 30-23 win over visiting USC Friday night.
The Gauchos, 8-4 overall and 4-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, hit .443 as a team. Outside hitter Jake Wien accumulated 14 kills, hitting an average of .455 overall, and Michael Kennedy had seven kills and six blocks as well. Nate Wake also contributed with seven kills. Libero Aaron Mansfield had 12 digs while setter Dane Jensen assisted the Gauchos with a match-high 45 assists.
USC outside hitter Joao Grangeiro had 10 kills while both Jeff Bailey and Blake Tippett chipped in nine kills apiece. The Trojans also received major contributions from setter J.T. Glimour who notched 37 assists and ended with a .402 setting percentage. Libero Doug English had seven digs.
Next up for No. 7 UC Santa Barbara is a Wednesday night match-up with UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, Feburary 18. Three days later the Gauchos return home to face No. 4 Pepperdine.
