Feb. 11, 2003 UC Santa Barbara swept the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs for a home victory Tuesday, 30-19, 30-25, 30-27. The non-conference win boosts the Gaucho record to 4-9 overall. The Slugs drop to 2-10 for 2003.
Anders Bengtsson led the Gaucho attack with 11 kills in two games, averaging .381. Dan Terry came in at second for kills, with 8 total and a .636 clip. UCSB started a different setter in each game, allowing Bart Kowalski 15 assists, Dane Jensen 19 assists, and Jared Godinez 17 assists. The Gauchos outblocked the Slugs 10.5 - 3.0, and outhit them .447 - .207.
UCSC sophomore outside hitter Simon Davenport led the Slugs with 11 kills in three games, and a .350 average. Sam Fullerton also contributed on the attack with 9 kills. Nick Brockman led the defense for the Banana Slugs, with 5 digs.
Up next, the Gauchos host Brigham Young University on Friday and Saturday (2/14 and 2/15) at 7pm. The Cougars are #4 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, with a 7-1 overall record.
