Santa Barbara, Calif.- Evan Patak had a career-high 32 kills, 4 blocks total and eight service aces to lead the men's volleyball team to a 30-27, 30-22, 32-34, 27-30, 15-13 (3-2) win over visiting Cal State Northridge Friday night.
The Gauchos, 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, hit .310 as a team. Outside hitter Jake Wiens accumulated 20 kills, hitting an average of .359 overall and Nate Wack contributed with 14 kills, hitting an average of .333 overall. Libero Aaron Mansfield had a match-high 26 digs while setter Dane Jensen assisted the Gauchos with a match-high and a career-high 73 assists.
Northridge outside hitters Nils Nielsen and Stan Douglas had 16 and 15 kills respectively, while Brian Waite, Dan Rhodes, and Cary Hanson each tallied 12 kills. The Matadors also received major contributions from setter Ty Tramblie who notched 71 assists and ended with a .461 setting percentage. Libero Doug English had 10 digs.
Next up for No. 7 UC Santa Barbara is Pacific on Jan. 29. From there, the Gauchos will battle Stanford on Jan. 30.
