SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - After finishing their first match of the season, the UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team rallied a win against Quincy University tonight in Rob Gym. The Gauchos soared by the Hawks in the first two games, 30-18 and 30-25, taking the lead in the beginning of the match. The third game showcased a comeback for the Hawks when they won 30-23. However, UCSB was able to eliminate that chance by winning the fourth game 30-25.
Quincy was led by Nathan Boyd with 12 kills, John Moreno with 11 kills, and Branden Been with 10 kills. Setter Robbie Mendenhall tallied 40 assists in the loss.
Along with their win, the UC Santa Gauchos showcased a variety of new and old talents on the court. Setter Dane Jensen led the Gauchos with 40 assists while both Justin Adams and Nate Wack totaled seven kills apiece. UCSB's top newcomers Jake Wiens and Evan Patak brought their talent to the match. Wiens rallied his way as the Gauchos' top hitter of the match with 12 kills (.304 hitting percentage). Redshirt freshman Patak played all four games and led the Gaucho offense with eight kills, and three blocks.
On Friday, January 9, UC Santa Barbara hosts the 40th Annual UCSB/ Elephant Bar Collegiate Invitational. Teams in the tournament include Long Beach State, Stanford, Cal State Northridge, UCLA, Pacific, USC and UC Irvine. Friday's games start at 7:00 pm in both Rob Gym and the Events Center. The Gauchos host Cal State Northridge in Rob Gym. Play resumes Saturday at 10:00 am with the championship match beginning at 7:00 pm Saturday in Rob Gym.
