Brandos Captures PR at Cal-Nevada Championships in San Diego

Scott Brandos, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, won the 3000m steeplechase in a personal best 9:09.13 on Friday at the Cal/Nevada Championships held at San Diego State University. Brandos took the lead of the race with three laps remaining and pulled away to win the event in an NCAA Regional qualifying time that was also the tenth fastest in UCSB history. The Gaucho women's 4x400m relay team of Ashley Lazarus(59.5), Emily Griffin(58.5), Kylie McCuen(57.2) and Elise Geiger(57.6) recorded the 8th best time in UCSB history, 3:52.83, in Friday's preliminary heats. Tashaurie Rogers replaced Geiger in Saturday's final, where the team finished seventh in 3:54.06.

The women's squad totaled 25 points to finish 13th out of 22 teams. Scorers for the Gaucho women included freshman Lauren Christman who ran a 1500m PR of 4:37.31 to qualify in the prelims and had a big kick to finish 4th in Saturday's final in a slower paced, tactical 4:40.54. Senior Liz Mallon ran 11:05.94 to finish 4th in the 3000m steeplechase final. Deborah Samson cleared 12' 2.75" to finish 5th in the pole vault. Stephanie Rothstein finished 7th in the 5000m, with a personal best 18:02.42 and Amy Haapanen placed 8th in the shot put final with a mark of 44' 11".

Lifetime bests and conference qualifiers were posted by Patrice Espinosa in the javelin (117' 7") and Desiree DeJesus in the 1500m (4:43.36). PR's were also notched by Diana Quinones in the 1500m (4:49.14), and Emily Griffin in the 400H (65.86).

The Gaucho men finished tenth out of 23 schools with 23 points. Chris White finished 4th in the 5000m with a time of 14:59.47, Cheyne Murray moved up to 6th in the discus final with his last throw of 167' 1", Nohel Corral finished 8th in the 400m final, and Kent Centers took 9th in the final of the 110HH, to round out the scoring for UCSB.

 

 

Conference qualifiers and personal bests were set in the prelims by Harrison Osourji in the 400m (48.82), Scott McConville in the 800m (1:55.50), Tetlo Emmen in the 1500m (3:57.52), and Richie Alpers in the shot put (47' 6.25"), while Alex Cardiasmenos achieved the Big West mark in the steeplechase final with a time of 9:42.81. PR's were also recorded by Tyler Smith in the hammer (145' 10"), Art Avitia in the 1500m (4:01.51), and Osourji in the 200m (22.55).
