The UCSB men's track & field team tied for second at the 11th annual Big West Challenge Cup held Saturday at UC Irvine. Following behind first place CS Long Beach with 194 points, the Gauchos tied UC Irvine for second at 147, just one point ahead of CS Fullerton. Gaucho distance runners won the 800m and had 1-2 finishes at 1500m and 3000m.
Freshman Tetlo Emmen outkicked former Big West Champion Darrell Tozier of UC Irvine in the 800m to finish in a personal best time of 1:52.59. Jeff Gardina won the 1500m in 3:58.27, Scott McConville kicked to second in 3:58.98, and Ryan McGinnis finished fifth in a PR 3:59.90. Seniors Aaron Sharp and JT Service took control of the 3,000m, trading off turns at the lead to wear down the field. Sharp won in 8:29.89 and Service finished second in a personal best 8:31.07.
Kent Centers a freshman from Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, won the high jump in a season best 6' 8", over Santosh Swamidass of UC Irvine who also cleared 6' 8", on the basis of fewer misses. Centers narrowly missed the NCAA Regional Qualifying mark of 6' 9.5" on his second attempt, and also made the the Big West mark in the 110HH with a time of 15.45.
Nohel Corral finished second in the 400m at 48.54. Preston Biller (23' 0) and Isaac Herrera (22' 10") came through for a second and third place finishes in the
long jump. Ryan Lockner finished second in the shot put with a personal best 49' 9", Cheyne Murray took second in the discus at 166' 11", and freshman
Eugene Bradley surpassed the conference standard in the hammer with a big PR of 162' 1".
