RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's track and field team won seven individual events and the 4x400 meter relay en route to victory at the All-Cal Challenge Cup on Saturday at UC Riverside. The men's squad total of 195 points topped second place UC Irvine who finished with 167 points followed by UC San Diego with 158 and UC Riverside with 116.
UCSB got off to a quick start with 1-2 finishes in the hammer and 3000m steeplechase. Junior Richie Alpers won the hammer while freshman Tyler Smith took second with a personal best of 143-0.
Cheyne Murray surpassed the NCAA Regional qualifier in the discus with a winning toss of 168-0. Ryan Lockner won the shot put with a best of 47-0.25 while Sean Bignami won the pole vault by clearing a personal best of 15-0.
Senior team captain JT Service cruised to victory in the steeple with a time of 9:24.87, while Scott Brandos finished second in a lifetime best and conference qualifying 9:31.07. Aaron Sharp won the 5000 meter in 14:48.94 followed by Jeff Gardina in 14:52.41, both going under the Big West standard of 15:05.
Other Gauchos who achieved conference qualifying marks on the day included DJ Ozan in the 800 meter (1:53.69), Scott McConville in the 1500 meter (3:58.64), Kent Centers in the high jump (6-6), Isaac Herrera in the long jump (22-8), Murray (45-8) and Alpers (45-7.75) in the shot put, and Eugene Bradley in the discus (146-5).

Corral anchored the victorious 4x400 relay that included Osourji, Tetlo Emmen and Ozan in a season best 3:19.12.
The Gauchos travel to Fullerton again on Saturday, March 8 for the Ben Brown Invitational.
