FULLERTON, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's track and field team opened the 2003 season with a convincing victory in a five-way meet at Fullerton on Saturday. The men's team tallied 168 points to defeat second place Cal State Fullerton (138). Cal State Bakersfield finished third with 94 points followed by UC Riverside with 83 and Cal State Los Angeles with 52.
The Gauchos distance runners dominated the middle distance and distance events. Fifth year senior Aaron Sharp led the Gaucho distance attack, winning the mile in a time of 4:19.60 and taking second in the two-mile. DJ Ozan won the 800 meter run in a 1:55.90 and finished third in the mile. Freshman Tetlo Emmen finished second in the 800 meter with a time of 1:56.69. Redshirt freshman Scott McConville came up with a 58-second last lap to finish second in the mile in a personal best time of 4:19.67.
Other highlights of the meet were in the field and hurdle events. Preston Biller finished second in the long jump with a lifetime best of 23-01.75. Cheyne Murray placed second in the discus while JC transfer mark Martello cleared a personal best of 15-00.25 in the pole vault, also placing second. Freshman Kent Centers finished third in both the 110 HH (15.53) and the high jump (6-04.75).
The Gauchos will travel to UC Riverside for the All-Cal Challenge Cup March 1.
