SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team opened the 2003 dual season with a 6-1 win over USF Saturday at the UCSB Courts. The Gauchos lost the doubles point but came back to sweep the singles matches for the win.
No. 55 ranked Carlos Palencia won his match at No. 1 singles, defeating USF's Joachim Lien 7-6, 6-3. No. 121 ranked Mirco Schwindt had little trouble with Pablo Pires DeAlmeida at No. 2 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2. Palencia and Schwindt paired at No. 1 doubles but were swept 8-0 by Lien and Mason Fuller. UCSB's No. 2 doubles team of Alex Anselme and Mike Placek won 8-2 for the Gauchos' only doubles win.
UCSB travels to Los Angeles Monday, January 27 for a dual match with USC. They return home Saturday, Feb. 1 to meet Loyola Marymount.
