Neil Jones' Two Goals Paces the 10th-ranked Gauchos to a 3-0 Victory Over Sacramento State to Remain Undefeated

Sept. 28, 2003

Box Score

Sacramento, Calif. - Neil Jones netted two goals and senior playmaker Memo Arzate tallied to game-winner to lead undefeated and tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (7-0-1) to a 3-0 non-conference win over Sacramento State (2-6-1). Junior goalkeeper Dan Kennedy ran his streak of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to 395:21 with his fourth straight shutout, the 17th complete game blanking of his career.

Sophomore Corey Wood picked up his first career collegiate point when he connected with David McGill to set up Arzate's game-winner in the 37th minute. Wood led McGill up the middle of the field with a pass that he controlled and dished off for Arzate to finish off. The goal was Arzate's fourth of the season and his second in as many games, while the assist was McGill's fifth on the year.

Arzate did not waste anytime making another mark of the scoresheet when he assisted on Jones' first goal at the 46th mark, improving the senior playmaker's conference lead to six assists. Not to be outdone, Jones added another goal in the 70th minute to move into a tie with teammate Drew McAthy for the top spot in the Big West Conference. McAthy recorded the assist on the third goal of the match for his first of the season.

Although not tested much, thanks to a defense anchored by Tony Lochhead and Greg Curry that allowed just six shots, Dan Kennedy posted his fourth consecutive shutout and his fifth of the season. Through first eight games of the 2003 season, the junior netminder has given up just three goals for a stellar 0.36 goals against average.

With the Gauchos picking up their seventh straight win to remain undefeated on the season, they set up a rematch of last year's game with Loyola Marymount. Undefeated entering last season's showdown with the Lions in Los Angeles, UCSB was sent home after suffering an overtime loss while playing a man down. With that said, Santa Barbara is next scheduled to do battle with LMU next Sunday, October 5th at 5:00 p.m. in Harder Stadium.
