21st-Ranked Gauchos Draw 1-1 at San Jose State in Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2003

Box Score

San Jose, Calif. - Continuing its opening day unbeaten streak to five years, the 21st ranked UC Santa Barbara men's soccer team tied San Jose State 1-1 at SJSU's Spartan Stadium. Both side's goalkeepers had big days, combining for 13 saves in the double-overtime contest, with UCSB's Dan Kennedy stoning seven of the Spartan's eight shots on goal.

Senior forward Neil Jones had the honor of scoring the Gauchos' first goal of the season, finishing off a Memo Arzate pass from 15 yards out in the 43rd minute. Arzate's assist marked the second straight season that the senior playmaker setup UCSB's first goal of the season.

Santa Barbara entered the half with a 1-0 lead, but San Jose State's Tim McKinney evened the scored at 1-1 in the 60th minute on a breakaway goal off the foot of Francisco Martinez.

The Gauchos rang up seven shots on goal, 17 total, playing without standout senior David McGill in the midfield who was serving a red card suspension from last season's NCAA Tournament.

UCSB next travels to Durham, North Carolina to face NC State and Duke in Duke's adidas Classic on Friday and Sunday, respectively. The Gauchos will open their home season against Michigan State the following Friday, September 12th in the newly resurfaced Harder Stadium.
