Steve Lass is in his 14th season as head coach of the UC Santa Barbara men's golf team.
In 1998, Lass led the Gauchos to their first ever Big West Conference title, earning Big West Coach of the Year honors. That year, the Gauchos went on to the NCAA West Regional where they edged Colorado State for the final spot at the NCAA Championships. The Gauchos also participated in the NCAA Championships in Lass' first year as head coach, 1994.
In addition to his coaching accolades, Lass has 37 years of tournament experience. He is an 12-time Santa Barbara Classic Champion, winning with John Pate 10 times and former UCSB player Scott Helton twice. Lass has qualified for and participated in three U.S. Mid-Amateurs and two U.S. Amateurs. He was also the runner-up at the 1987 Southern California Amateur Golf Championship. In fact, he has won tournaments in five consecutive decades.
Lass also represented the United States in the Chase/Pan Am World Amateur Team-Play Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 1988. Although he no longer does so, Lass served for many years on the Southern California Golf Association Rating Committee.
Lass graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in psychology. He attended La Salle High School where he played basketball, baseball, track and golf. He enjoys reading, hiking and going to the beach.
