UCSB Baseball Team Can't Find Winning Ways Against San Jose State

Feb. 14, 2003

Box Score

Santa Barbara, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara (2-6) baseball lost the first game of a three game series 8-3 against San Jose State (3-2) on Friday. Starting pitcher and team ace Matt Vasquez (1-1) only lasted three and a third innings, getting handed his first loss on the season. Vasquez gave up seven hits and six earned runs before yielding to the bullpen.

San Jose State jumped out to an early lead by scoring four runs in the first inning. Four hits and an error gave the Trojans all the runs that they would need for the afternoon. Vasquez was able to get out of a two-on one-out situation to end the inning.

The Gauchos weren't able to put a run on the board until the sixth inning, already down 8-0 at that point. Catcher Chad Ziemendorf collected his second hit of the day, driving in Josh McCanne. McCanne had previously doubled to bring in DH Taylor Vogt for the first run. Matt Stevens also collected a pinch hit double, plating Ziemendorf for the third and final run for the Gauchos.

Ziemendorf, continuing his hot streak, was three for three on the day. His hitting accounted for half of the six hits UCSB would get against San Jose.

Nate Corrick, the Spartan leadoff hitter, went 4-4 with a walk. Former Santa Barbara Forester player Kevin Frandson was 2-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Game two will be on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Municipal Stadium. Sean Thompson will take the hill for the Gauchos. Game three is on Sunday, also at 1:00 pm at Municipal Stadium.
